The Arusha Agreement in 2000 contributed in achieving a kind of peace and internal stability in Burundi after long periods of instability punctuated by many internal unrest and civil wars. The policies of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy led by former President Nkurunziza helped to approve the country's new constitution and hold elections in Its deadline (every four years), with an attempt to persuade the opposition to take political action and move away from resorting to violence and the language of weapons.
