Abstract

This review aims to provide an analytical and critical reading of the research paper titled "The Role of the European Union in Conflict Resolution in the Eastern Neighborhood: Selected Models." It does so by identifying the theoretical foundations upon which the paper interprets the nature of European effectiveness, deconstructing its conceptual premises related to normative power, crisis management, and preventive diplomacy, evaluating the methodology employed in addressing its applied models, and analyzing its conclusions. The ultimate goal is to situate the paper within the contemporary literature on the European Union and conflict resolution. The review adopts a systemic analytical approach as its primary procedural framework, identifying the structural and contextual inputs that govern the EU's behavior in the Eastern Neighborhood, tracing its practical outputs in crisis management, and assessing the internal consistency between its theoretical framework and its applied tools. Furthermore, it seeks to test the study's ability to explain the limits of the European role in an environment characterized by the intertwining of regional and international interests, particularly in light of its interaction with Russia as an influential actor in the conflict dynamics.  The review also focused on analyzing how the research addressed the selected models in the Eastern Neighborhood countries, such as Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, in terms of mediation tools, monitoring missions, partnership agreements, institutional support programs, and the extent of their success in containing or managing conflicts. Thus, the review sought to assess the cognitive value of the study, and the extent of its contribution to explaining the shift in the role of the European Union from an economic-development actor to a security-political actor more involved in managing the conflicts of its Eastern Neighborhood, while indicating the limits of this shift and its potential in light of the structural and institutional challenges facing the European project.
