The Impact of Sea-Level Rise on the State in International Law

Sea level rise poses a significant geopolitical threat, potentially radically altering the current division of maritime rights between states. Although sea level rise can be described as a slow process, international legal measures to address it are proceeding just as slowly. Addressing these impacts as they progress is therefore crucial. The future of sea level rise remains highly uncertain, as it depends on the dynamics of the massive ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica, as well as the interaction between mean sea level, storm patterns, and extreme water levels. This threatens the very existence of small island developing states and the process of demarcating their maritime borders based on baselines.
