Abstract

This study examines the experience of peacebuilding in Ethiopia during the tenure of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed since 2018, amid major political transformations and the escalation of ethnic conflicts within the country. The research analyzes the role of the 2022 Pretoria Agreement and the National Dialogue initiative as two key mechanisms for conflict management and for facilitating the transition from the cessation of violence toward sustainable peace. The study adopts a descriptive–analytical approach based on official documents, reports from international organizations, and relevant academic literature. The findings indicate that the Pretoria Agreement contributed to reducing violence in the Tigray region, yet its impact remained limited due to weak implementation mechanisms and the persistence of tensions in other regions.

The study concludes that peacebuilding efforts in Ethiopia remain largely focused on crisis management rather than the establishment of sustainable peace, highlighting the need for deeper institutional reforms and a more inclusive political environment.
